The Annual Barbeque Pot Luck:Blue Ox Community School students celebrated the end of the school year by having a BBQ pot luck at Blue Ox. The much anticipated yearbooks were unveiled and passed around for signatures. Each student had hand-set their own bio and printed the pages on our 1890 pedal-powered letterpress printer. A massive push just prior to the end of the school year included students hand sewing pages together, and a late night gluing of the covers. We all were very proud of our efforts! |
A Special Present:Speeches and expressions of gratitude culminated with the presentation of the stunning quilts hand-made individually for the graduating seniors by Jan Warner, one of our school’s most beloved staff members. This is a new annual tradition lovingly started by Jan herself. Additionally, since Connie was retiring after 30 years in the education field, Jan made her a quilt as well. We will miss them all, but know they will always be part of the Blue Ox extended family! |

The Key Note Address:At the Community School Graduation, former student Levi Mogg was the key note speaker. This was a proud moment for us all, as it was the first time that a former Community School student had given the key note address. The challenges he has faced in his life have helped him to succeed as a peer counselor with teenagers. His future plans include going to college to become a teacher. |
Student Projects:Naomi, Nick, and Brandon were our graduating seniors this year. In addition to meeting all the state requirements for graduation, they each completed a senior project. Nick’s senior project focused on creating air-brushed T-shirts with his own designs, Brandon’s project was a stunning free standing blacksmithed wine bottle holder. Each project required a detailed write-up telling how it was made. |

Student Projects (Continued)Naomi followed on the success of her article in our local weekly newsmagazine by presenting her story to all the other community schools and inviting and documenting their responses and feedback. She also gave a presentation about her senior project to the Humboldt County School Board. She was especially proud that her willingness to speak in public about her very personal challenges has helped other students face some of their similar issues. |
